I am giving the book, Summer Fated To Be Mine, four out of five stars. The book is about a young adult love triangle, and at first, I was a little skeptical about the plot being cliche. However, the voice of the main character, Zakiah, really makes the story come to life. His voice is conversational throughout the text, making it easy for the reader to visualize the plot from his twenty-one year old point of view. The informal tone and/or voice of the text resonates with both the storyline and the reader as this book is marketed for young adults.

Another feature of the book that kept it from being a cliche plotline is the alternation between Zakiah’s past and his present. Such transitions can sometimes be very confusing to the reader if the author does not structure the two storylines correctly. However, this was not the case in Summer Fated To Be Mine. The author’s use of distinguishing between the past and the present in the chapter titles and the detailed descriptions in the opening paragraphs of each chapter allowed the reader to situate themselves into the time frame being addressed in that particular part of the book.

One suggestion that I have is that the emotional and/or personal connection between Glory and Zakiah be expanded upon and explored more as the plot moves forward. The physical connection they share when they first meet is made evident. However, as their relationship develops, the physical still seems to take precedent over the emotional. Their connection seems to be established more on lust, which I do not think the author intended, as the characters profess several times in the story that they desire to be friends until they can sort out the complicated family dynamics they are trying to navigate.

The grammar usage in the text was, for the most part, correct. However, there were some misspelled words, subject/verb agreement errors, and words that were used incorrectly.

Summer Fated To Be Mine is a book that took a cliche, often overused, plotline and made it unique. The main character’s voice and the author’s transitions from past to present keep the reader engaged and entertained until the end.
