If you enjoy reading dystopian books, I highly recommend Breksta's Academy! Out of five, I give this book a 4. It was a fantastic read with very little that put me off from reading or enjoying it. I didn't even find any typos or grammatical errors, which are extremely rare! This book would not be a good fit if you are looking for a feel-good, all-happy book where everyone lives. It tackles lots of challenging issues, including the death of loved ones and genocide.
The book follows the lives of two girls, Breksta and Hestia. Breksta was raised in a small town before being ripped away from it and her mother. Breksta is brought to the "Academy" to become a cadet under the strict hands of its director. The director's daughter, Hestia, became roommates and good friends with Breksta. We, as readers, follow them through their lives living at the Academy, learning to kill and hunt down the last of the "Dreamers." The Dreamers are humans with special abilities given to them by an old god named Morpheus. Both Breksta and Hestia yearn for something more throughout the book.
The way this author describes the characters and the world they built is impressive. I absolutely adored the characterization and friendship between Breksta and Hestia; their actions constantly show how strong they are with each other. The book's pacing was also excellent and skipped through the characters' lives at great times to keep the book on track. The author's way of showing the character's inner thoughts and feelings is also great and allows the readers more insight into the characters. I wish there were more of that characterization for the characters Ms. Adams and Olivia. While they both were more background characters that were important to some of the main characters, they also deserved to have their inner thoughts conveyed, Ms. Adams more than Olivia, but the point stands. Besides that, I absolutely loved this story and look forward to reading more from this author.
