In “Opaque” by Calix Leigh-Reign, 16-year-old Adam Caspian sets out on a journey of self-discovery in a world of magic powers, criminal scientists, and ethereal love. The story begins with Adam developing his abilities with the help of Carly, a determined and independent character who plays the character of his loving girlfriend. As Adam’s feelings for Carly intensify, he is plunged into a twist of confusion and personal growth. The relationship between the two allows him to unravel his hideous descendants, who have been veiled behind lies and secrets for too long. Gradually, more information about his past, Adam, his birth, and the source of his strength is unraveled. He also gains the special ability to look into people’s pasts. As Adam approaches the truth about himself and his fate, he questions what he is and who he is to be.

Truthfully, it only took me the first page to become an absolute fan of this series. Adam’s ability to control his powers and his search for his identity, as well as the author’s decision to combine sci-fi, fantasy, and romance genres, make this book an enthralling read. The book is full of well-developed characters, and this is one of the biggest strengths of the book. The protagonist, Adam, is brought out excellently and depicted as a human like any other, with his strengths and weaknesses. He’s not a hero, not a saint—he is just an ordinary teenager who somehow gets caught up in extraordinary events. Likewise, Carly is constructed as a strong, independent teenager who actively takes control of her narratives and shapes the course of events. Some readers may not be pleased by the sudden transition of the book from the psychological thriller to the fantastical elements, but I think that is one of the novel’s strongest aspects—its bold mixing of genres. However, I have to warn potential readers that the book features sexual hints, violence, and profanities.

I liked that the text had no formatting errors, as well as the author’s storytelling skills, which captivated me till the end. The best thing I liked about the book was the way it offered action, suspense, and strong emotions all together in a way that made it a book I will never forget. Overall, I highly recommend "Opaque" to fans of sci-fi, fantasy, and romance, and I give it a well-deserved five out of five stars. With its intricate world-building, complex characters, and unexpected twists, this book is a must-read for anyone seeking a powerful emotional experience. So get yourself a copy; you won't regret it!
