Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is an engaging young adult fantasy novel that blends science fiction, elements of suspense, romance, and supernatural intrigue. The book introduces Adam Caspian, a teenager who struggles with his dark thoughts and with intense feelings of isolation. His journey takes a significant turn when Carly Wit enters his life, revealing that Adam is not just an ordinary teenager but a descendant of a powerful bloodline with unique abilities. As the two teenagers discover more about their origins, they face threats from an organisation known as Iksha, a covert organisation determined to eradicate those with extraordinary powers.

A key strength of the book is its skilful integration of supernatural elements with the intense and often turbulent emotions of adolescence. Adam’s journey from a troubled, isolated teenager to a determined individual confronting his destiny is portrayed with emotional depth. Carly, on the other hand, serves as the grounding force in his life, guiding him through self-discovery. Their dynamic creates a compelling narrative that is not only about fighting external enemies but also about embracing one's identity, no matter how complicated.

The author does an impressive job of world-building. The author’s creative approach in blending real-world settings with fantastical elements enhances the immersion, allowing readers to visualise the unique powers and environments vividly.

Despite the darker tones, the novel is ultimately a tale of growth and transformation. Adam's journey from a troubled teenager to someone who begins to understand the significance of his powers is satisfying. This character development, coupled with the high stakes and suspenseful plot, makes the book an interesting read. The author skilfully balances the magical elements with real-world challenges, making the story both fantastical and relatable.

I particularly like how the book masterfully blends the supernatural with the complexities of adolescent emotions.

The editing is flawless, with no noticeable errors, and the pacing is well structured. The author’s use of vivid imagery and well-crafted dialogue enhances the reading experience. The balance between action, character interaction, and world-building is commendable. There is nothing to dislike about the book.

I would confidently rate the book 5 out of 5 stars because of its strong character development, imaginative world-building, and flawless editing. The story’s mix of fantasy, emotional depth, and suspense makes it a perfect read for young adult readers and those who enjoy stories with a blend of the supernatural and real-world challenges.
