“Opaque” by Calix Leigh-Reign is a compelling young adult novel that merges the complexities of teenage life with the intrigue of supernatural powers and ancient prophecies. The story centers around Adam, a troubled teenager who struggles to fit into the human world, and Carly, a mysterious new girl who instantly connects with him. Their meeting sets off a chain of events that leads them to discover their shared ancestry as Descendants—people with extraordinary abilities targeted by dangerous enemies known as the Iksha. As they unravel the mysteries of their past, Adam and Carly must confront their inner demons and decide what kind of people they want to be.

From the beginning, the book draws you in with its dark and twisted portrayal of Adam's thoughts and feelings. His strained relationship with his father and confusing attachment to his mother adds layers to his character, making him both intriguing and unsettling. Carly's arrival at his school marks a turning point, introducing a spark of light into Adam's otherwise bleak existence. Together, they embark on a journey of self-discovery, fighting to protect themselves and their newfound friends from the threats surrounding them.

I particularly enjoyed the chemistry between Adam and Carly. Their relationship is intense and tender, offering a sense of balance to the story's darker elements. The author's portrayal of their growing bond is realistic and relatable, making it easy to root for them as they face increasingly complex challenges. The action scenes are vivid and well-paced, keeping me on the edge of my seat as the plot unfolds. I also appreciated the depth given to the supporting characters, especially Dauma, whose wisdom and strength added richness to the story.

However, there were moments when the dialogue felt a bit cliché, and some plot developments seemed too convenient, with characters knowing just the right thing at the right time. Despite these minor flaws, I found myself fully invested in the outcome and eager to see where the story would go.

Although specific plot developments seem too convenient, which can occasionally disrupt the story flow, I rate this book five out of five stars because the book is excellently edited, with no noticeable errors that would undermine the reading experience. I highly recommend it to young adults who enjoy a mix of romance, action, and fantasy. The dark themes are handled with care, making it suitable for teenagers and adults looking for a story that combines emotional depth with thrilling adventure. Fans of series like “The Mortal Instruments” or “Divergent” will likely find “Opaque” to be a captivating addition to their reading list.
