Review of Opaque
[Following is a volunteer review of "Opaque" by Calix Leigh-Reign.]
Adam knew he differed from everyone else. He felt he was a monster for wanting an intimate relationship with his mother. On the first day of school, as Adam was entering the building, Vikki called out to him. Despite finding Vikki repulsive, Adam notices that she does not realize he wants to be left alone. In desperation, he tells her he needs a drink and hurries into the bathroom. After a few minutes, Adam heads for class, feeling a strange vibration in his chest. His nose bleeds at night, his eyes are itchy, and the vibration in his chest confuses him.
While sitting in class, the vibration in Adam's chest increases. He looks up and sees Carly, a new student. She captures his attention, and his thoughts are overwhelmed by her beauty. As the days pass, he can’t help feeling a connection to Carly. Carly finds Adam intriguing because she believes he might be like her. A fateful decision Adam makes one evening is about to prove Carly’s theory true. The results will alter reality for both.
Calix Leigh-Reign’s Opaque is a fantasy story featuring Adam and Carly. Adam’s need for his personal life to be routine and lack of social interaction make him appear almost autistic. His thoughts about people being repulsive prove otherwise. Carly is aware of her differences and feels drawn to Adam. Her secretive life and her move to Piure were intentional. The plot is full of suspense and is captivating. Watching Adam’s negativity change is intriguing. A cliffhanger ending follows, along with an unpredictable story.
Opaque sets a compelling foundation as the first book in a fantasy series. I have nothing I would want to change about the book. The timeline, character development, and interesting discoveries were fascinating. I rate this novel five out of five stars. The elements of redemption and compassion for humanity were present in the vivid imagery found on every page. The emotions of the characters felt relatable.
Opaque will appeal to fans of fantasy romance novels. Transforming Adam and Carly adds depth and showcases their personalities in an easy-to-understand story that young adults may appreciate. There are a few scenes of violence and profanity that could offend some people. There is one graphic scene that suggests the sinister intention of a deviant sexual act that I feel requires a warning to sensitive readers.
