The Adventures of Uncle Billy & Ross: Life Lessons Made Simple by Solon Phillips is a 4 out of 5 stars. The characters, Uncle Billy and Ross, were realistic and endearing. The dialogue shared between the two was authentic and relatable. Some of my fondest memories are sitting with my grandparents and great aunts or uncles – hearing their stories and receiving advice. This book brought me back to the nostalgia and feelings of comfort and home. My only complaint with the book is that it ended sooner than I wanted and seemed to end abruptly.
Regardless of the desire to read more, what is included in the book is rich and perfect for reading with students or other children. The relationship between Uncle Billy and Ross models the importance and health of having difficult conversations with safe, trusted adults. This book would be a great read for people in similar life circumstances, providing fresh perspective and encouragement in what they are facing. The book would also benefit readers with different perspectives as it exposes and broadens their empathy and understanding of their peers.
The topics Uncle Billy and Ross cover apply to people of all ages but are very common among teens like Ross. The lessons are chunked in concise sections, which lends well to further discussion and question creation. Billy and Ross approach the conversation with ease and comfort due to the closeness of their relationship; however, some of the topics could require more vulnerability and sensitivity when reading and discussing with children.
Overall, the writing was believable and engaging. While reading, I felt like I was sitting with Uncle Billy and Ross. The language used in the dialogue was realistic and matched the characters and their backgrounds. I did not notice any errors and did not have any difficulty following along with the plot. I recommend this book.
