‘Opaque’ by Calix Leigh-Reign is the first book in the Scion Saga series. The main protagonists in this young adult fiction are genetically mutated and have supernatural powers. The hero is a 16-year-old boy named Adam Caspian, who is an outcast. He cannot relate to the humans surrounding him, not even his father. He hates hanging around with his peers in school. Then, Carly Wit joins his class. He senses on the very first day that she is different. She soon becomes the second-most important person in his life, the first being his mother.

With Carly’s friendship, he overcomes a lot of his troubles and discovers his truth. His journey with Carly changes his life completely. She introduces him to his powers. Together, they venture into new adventures and meet other supernatural beings.

Carly is the strongest character in the book. She is very confident and mature for a 16-year-old. Carly's mother, Dauma, is an intimidating and mysterious character. Together, the mother-daughter duo has the power to make the story female-oriented.

I will rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I found just one error in the whole book. The author has used an omniscient point of view. This style of narration gave me an insight into all the main characters’ minds. The writing is clear and concise. Despite having such a varied set of characters and a complex storyline, the story moved forward at a quick pace. There was never a dull moment.

I would like to recommend this book to people who love thrillers. I find young adult fiction much more enjoyable than usual thrillers because the sense of urgency is always greater with teenagers. This book is particularly appealing because it leaves you wanting more. I cannot wait to pick up the second book in the series.

Happy reading!
