Review of Opaque
“Opaque” is a modern-day supernatural book written by Calix Leigh-Reign. It is a young adult novel that depicts familial adventures and the discovery of supernatural abilities. The novel shows the determination of youths in tracing back their origins and fighting for freedom at the same time.
The author portrays the willfulness of the teenage years, showing how two teens come together fighting for a common goal while uncovering truths that could either mend them or break them. An instance is when Carly found out about Adams dark side and also when Adam discovered his heritage. It was quite fulfilling to see the choices they made in these instances as 16-year-olds.
The novel is written in an English-Russian setting where English is the primary language while the characters have Russian heritage. This properly transmitted the kind of setting the story was trying to effectively pass across. A theme I really enjoyed in the book, among others, was love—not only romantic love but also familial love. Carly is able to not only stay with Adam despite his unhealthy obsession and dark side but also play a huge part in making the little light he had shine bright at the end. Also, how Adam is able to set aside his selfishness in order to protect Carly was another expression of love that I liked. Adam's love for his mother and regret about his father were still apparent, despite all the secrets that were revealed in the course of the story.
The author is able to describe places and happenings in detail, which allows readers' imagination to run its course. This only goes to show the level of descriptive ability this author has. I found it easy to picture scenes and locations in the story. The fact that there were no grammatical errors made the reading completely effortless. I really was not able to predict what happened next, as there were a lot of unexpected twists that built my excitement to keep reading. For instance, the twist in Adam's journey of discovering his true identity was one that caught me by surprise.
The beginning of the book was quite dull. It could make one uninterested in an instant, as it was hard to understand at once. I had to read some portions again to fully understand what the author was trying to say. This was because the descriptions for those specific parts were not quite clear to me at first until I read them the second time. This was the only aspect of the book I did not enjoy.
There are events or pieces of information that were disclosed that were not addressed in the book, which built the suspense and curiosity so much that I now have to read the sequel to see how these things unfold. Overall, "Opaque" is a really excellent book that I will recommend, as it is not only entertaining but also full of surprises that keep the reader interested. For these reasons, I will give this book a 5 out of 5 rating. The negative aspect I mentioned does not warrant deducting a star, for it was mainly just a personal opinion.
