Review of The Adventurers of Uncle Billy & Ross
The Adventures of Uncle Billy and Ross: Life Lessons Made Simple by author Solon Phillips, Esq., is a wonderful book highlighting the important lessons of life in the form of conversation between an uncle and a nephew. In the scope of seven short chapters, with a different story in each of them, Phillips has done an astounding job of teaching the most important life lessons to the readers.
Other than being an award-winning author and playwright, Solon Phillips, Esq. is a licensed attorney and managing partner of the law firm, Remus Enterprises Law Group, where the motto is: whoever tells the best story wins. This motto is reflected in the simple but fluent storytelling skills of the author throughout the book, which makes it a very pleasant read for readers of all ages.
The book revolves around the challenges Ross faces in his day-to-day life as his mother, a single mother, works hard in order to provide for herself and Ross, and how her brother, Ross’s Uncle Billy, or Uncle B, teaches Ross to overcome these challenges with the help of valuable life lessons. He teaches Ross to appreciate what he already has and to change his view of life. He teaches Ross the importance of saving and the importance of knowing one’s own culture. He teaches Ross the importance of choosing the correct friends. Through different stories and conversations, Uncle Billy teaches Ross the power of believing and the power of the way he thinks.
What distinguishes this book from other similar life lesson books is the way the author portrays his characters.
Ross is a young boy who often throws tantrums and is attracted to a richer lifestyle, but he is also a quick learner. With proper guidance from Uncle Billy, he learns to appreciate his surroundings and his culture.
Ross’s mother is an independent woman and a single mother who works hard to provide for Ross and herself. She takes good care of her son and makes sure he gets a proper education, but she can also be a bit short-tempered sometimes.
Uncle Billy takes care of Ross after his school ends. He is a very wise man and teaches Ross several valuable life lessons in a way that Ross understands. He takes care not to swear in front of his young nephew. But he also complains about the younger generation all the time.
These contrasts in their characters make them feel more human and more relatable to the readers.
Even though the stories are based on the lives of a young African American boy and his uncle, I think people from all over the world can take inspiration and life lessons from these stories. The use of simple and fluid language in this book, the author’s amazing storytelling and writing skills, along with its short and crisp content, make this book a must-read for people of different age groups. I would rate this book a solid 5 out of 5.
The author and the editor have also done an amazing job of editing this book. I could not find a single spelling mistake in the entire book, which is really a huge feat.
I absolutely love this book and could not really find anything negative about it, although the mention of slavery in the chapter about black history can be triggering for some people. I’d really like to recommend this book to every reader out there looking to change their outlook on life.
