With its intricate characters, exciting storyline, and unapologetic examination of the darkness that can exist inside a person's mind, the young adult fantasy book "Opaque" by Calix Leigh-Reign transcends the genre. Adam, a teenager with a lot of unsettling ideas and thoughts running through his head, is the book's protagonist. Adam finds himself drawn to Carly, a new student at his school. Growing close to Carly reveals something shocking about their background: they are descended from two of the seven Russian bloodlines marked by glowing Limbal Rings. These descendants are endowed with extraordinary powers and have been targeted by Iksha, a vicious organization, for centuries.

The brilliance of "Opaque" lies in its characters. At first, Adam is a melancholic and troubled person who struggles with the darkness that flows through him. In contrast, Carly shows herself to be a pillar of support and steadfast loyalty. The bond they form serves as the emotional core of the story. The thing I adored the most about this book was Adam's mother's love for him—despite being aware of the danger that accompanies his abilities, she was still willing to go to great lengths to be with him and was incredibly supportive. Another thing I liked about this book is that the author does not shy away from depicting the complexities of adolescent relationships and the volatile mix of anger, fear, and desperate hope that most teenagers experience as they grow into adults. This book was edited with great care and has no errors at all.

There is more to "Opaque" than just a tale of coming-of-age. It explores the addictive qualities of power and the extent to which people will go to wield it. With their scientific iciness, the members of the Iksha organization provide a startling contrast to the main characters. There was nothing I disliked about the book, though Adam's way of thinking and reasoning almost made me stop reading, particularly his description and thoughts about his mother, but by the middle of the book, his entire character makeup had evolved and made the book worthwhile. I rate this book five out of five stars.

I wholeheartedly recommend "Opaque" to readers who enjoy books that blend fantasy, action, and romance.
