Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is the first book in the Scion Saga series, aimed at young adult readers. It blends science fiction, fantasy, romance, and mystery into a compelling narrative that follows the lives of two teenagers, Adam and Carly, whose supernatural abilities and dark secrets set them apart from their peers.

The story centers on Adam, a 16-year-old student from Piure, California, who struggles with dark and sinister thoughts and exhibits sociopathic behavior. His life changes when Carly, a new student, arrives at his school. Carly's calm and accepting nature draws Adam in, and they quickly form a deep connection. As their friendship grows, Adam discovers that he is a "descendant," a mutated human with supernatural powers. This revelation puts his life in danger as a group of scientists, known as the Iksha, plots to destroy the descendants and steal their abilities. Together, Adam and Carly must navigate their newfound powers and the threats that come with them.

One of the standout aspects of the book is its world-building. The author skillfully explains the origins and abilities of the descendants, making the sci-fi elements easy to understand and engaging. The characters are complex and well-developed. Adam's journey from a troubled teen to a hero discovering his true identity is compelling. Carly's bravery and calm demeanor provide a perfect contrast to Adam's dark nature. The dual first-person perspectives keep the narrative dynamic and offer insights into both protagonists' thoughts and feelings.

The book's pacing is another highlight. The action is continuous, and the suspense keeps readers hooked. For instance, the plan to rescue Carly's father from the Iksha adds significant tension and excitement. The author's use of rich vocabulary enhances the reading experience, and the book is impeccably edited with no grammatical errors.

While the book has many strengths, it also has some drawbacks. The darker themes, such as rape, infidelity, and mental health issues, might be challenging for some readers. Adam's unhealthy obsession with his mother is particularly unsettling and may be off-putting. Some actions of the characters are questionable and morally gray, which, although adding to the complexity of the plot, might not appeal to all readers.

Overall, Opaque is a well-crafted novel that successfully combines various genres into an engaging story. Character development, world-building, and a suspenseful plot are its major strengths. Despite some darker themes and unsettling elements, the book is a page-turner that will captivate its target audience. I rate Opaque 5 out of 5 stars for its originality, well-developed characters, and seamless narrative.

I highly recommend this book to older teenagers and adults who enjoy young adult fiction with supernatural and psychological elements. Fans of sci-fi, fantasy, and mystery will find this book particularly appealing. However, due to the mature themes and content, it is not suitable for younger readers. This book promises an exciting start to the Scion Saga series and leaves readers eager for the next installment.
