Opaque, by Calix Leigh-Reign, is an intriguing young adult novel. The first book of the Scion Saga series is full of romance, intrigue, and adventure.

Adam, our ethically dubious teenage lead, appeared a little strange. His recent unconventional body changes have troubled him, leaving him feeling bitter, cynical, and angry. From an early age, Adam has been able to control the wind, which he sees as his friend, whom he has named Zsita. He believed that everyone might obtain similar abilities through self-training. He does not seem to like anyone except his mother. Adam despises humans and views them as animals. He is unable to convey his feelings and hates everyone.

On the first day of school after vacation, surprising things happen with the arrival of a new girl. Adam is attracted to Carly. Mutual curiosity leads to friendship, which slowly leads to romantic relationships. Adam and Carly's relationship is breathtaking; they clicked at once and remained together till the end. As Adam comes to terms with his adoption, he starts looking for his biological parents. Carly assists him at every turn and discovers that Adam descended from a long line of Russian ancestors who shared her remarkable abilities.

To protect themselves and their families from Iksha, a group of evil scientists who capture them to gain their supernatural abilities, they hide their abilities from everyone and live in fear. Carly's mother, Dauma, assisted Adam in discovering and exercising his skills. She is the epitome of a powerful woman.

I enjoyed reading every chapter and loved every character. Adam's mind is like an opaque object where light cannot enter or pass, creating a dreadful impression of inner nothingness and invisibility. The novel's title, Opaque, is appropriate and accurately defines the character. I was perplexed by Adam's obsession with his mother and disliked where it was going, but I ultimately figured out why. I loved how he gradually grew to love JoAnn as a mother and promised to protect her.

I recommend it for those seeking an exciting young adult adventure. I truly enjoyed the book and would like to read the sequel. The book is professionally edited and flawless. I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars.
