"Opaque" by Calix Leigh-Reign is a young adult and fantasy novel that follows the lives of Adam, a 16-year-old boy who struggles with his intense emotions, the main one being the repulsion he feels towards other people that makes him angry and disgusted with every other human to the point of calling everyone except his mother "animals"; and Carly, the new girl in Adam's school who just moved from her hometown and is experiencing a normal life in a school for the first time.

In the first chapters, we get to know Adam and his desperation to understand what he thinks is a darkness inside of him. But then Carly comes to his school and the usual disgust he feels for others is not there and the scent of other people, which is usually what he hates the most, is what attracts him to Carly the most. This is when a series of events will make them get to know each other better and discover that they have more in common than they think.

Adam has a lot to learn about himself and will soon realize that his strong emotions are caused by a genetic mutation. He will also learn that there are many evil people in the world who despise his entire family and who pose the greatest threat to anyone who crosses their path. Will he ever come across these wicked people? With this fresh knowledge, what action will Adam take?

“Opaque” is the first installment in the Scion Saga, and I can't wait to read the rest of the books because it got off to a fantastic start.

The connection between Adam and Carly is immediate, and even if it seems too intense or fast at the beginning of the book, it all makes sense later on. Nothing was left unfinished by the author and this is one of the things about the story that I enjoy the best.

I like the author's ability to create such a rich environment; I could feel the characters' despair and wrath because of how vividly they were described. In addition, the author deserves praise for giving the majority of the characters rich, well-developed backstories without detracting from the primary plot.

The narrative itself was the one aspect of the book that caused me any difficulty; at times, particularly in the beginning, it was difficult to follow because the narration's point of view fluctuated a lot and occasionally confused me. But as the novel progressed, it got better, and the action-packed narrative quickly captivated me.

My rating for this book is 5 out of 5 because the author created an exciting story with complex characters that kept the reader engaged. Although the writing could have been better and there were a few errors, these aspects did not detract from the overall experience.

I recommend this book to all young adult fanatics as well as those looking for an entertaining fantasy read. In terms of age, it does contain strong language that makes the book more suitable for an adult audience.
