Review of Opaque
Adam Caspian is a highly confused teenager living in Piure, California. He has weird experiences at night involving the wind and extreme heat. He is in love with his mother and hates his father. Adam hates the school he attends, the teachers and the other students. His bible is a book detailing how a sociopath can avoid detection by regular people. Carly Wit joins the school Adam attends, and from their very first encounter, there is a powerful attraction between them.
“Opaque” is the first book in the three-part Scion series for Young Adults written by Calix Leigh-Reign. Carly has extraordinary powers, and she recognizes similar capabilities within Adam. She explains the legacy of several Russian families with mutated genes, passing on superhuman abilities to their offspring. Carly also helps Adam acknowledge his special powers and hone his skills. Carly and Adam get involved in an age-old war between the Descendants, as the descendants of the Russian families are known, and the Iksha, a group of scientists who want to obtain the powers of the Descendants and destroy them.
I love the way that Adam’s character evolves. He loves Carly dearly and will do anything to protect her and keep her safe. He meets a new family when he gets introduced to Carly’s mother and other Descendants. His personality changes now that he has friends, understands why he is different from most people and has a meaningful purpose. His love for Carly and the goodness within her triggers his change as he starts to understand how special she is and how much she loves him. The superpowers of the Descendants were very well described, and the way they worked together, protected and assisted one another was endearing. Dauma, Carly’s mother, is one of the characters I appreciate the most. She has a healthy moral compass, speaks her mind, and punishes wrong behavior without compunction, but displays deep love and caring. The author crafted a fascinating story and told it beautifully. There is enough closure at the end to satisfy the reader but still enough secrets to uncover to inspire reading the second book in the series.
The book starts slowly, and it takes a while for the story to unfold. Adam’s character in the beginning is weird, referring to other people as animals, having a severe Oedipus complex, and planning to harm people he meets. This description, however, sets the scene for the changes that Adam goes through and highlights the contrast between the old and the new Adam. I discovered a few errors, but nothing to distract from my enjoyment of this book. These were the aspects that I didn’t like.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The few criticisms I mentioned were not reason enough to deduct a star.
The book contains profanity and sexual references, which may offend sensitive readers.
