Calix Leigh-Reign's "Opaque" is about a young adult coming of age; however, the novel isn't so consistent on the part of the author in terms of the realistic depiction of conflicts among the main characters. It is as if I am observing through a kaleidoscope; some aspects are just breathtaking and I am in awe, while others are just there and my attention doesn't pay attention to them.

The story revolves around Adam, a cynical teen who is accidentally immersed in a world of the supernatural beyond his critical thinking. Leigh-Reign is the best at creating a hidden world. We meet Scions, the beings who have amazing abilities, through Adam's astonished eyes. This makes a reader feel like he is exploring things with the main character and thus encourages the reader to keep reading till the very end. Adam's transformation is at the core of the story.

The main point of the plot is a budding relationship between Adam and Carly. Here, the writing shines. The way she connects with him is real, based on mutual trust and an innate curiosity. Nevertheless, the rate of emotional involvement they experience might seem unearned to this reader. Leigh-Reign attempts a very risky circus act. The story imaginatively combines action, romance, and a worldview. Nevertheless, the process isn't always problem-free. The book starts by spending some time on world-building and introducing characters. The action scenes, although present, might need a bit more lucidity.

I will give 5 out of 5 stars for "Opaque. The book is not without its flaws. The editing process of making amendments to inconsistencies has, on occasion, diminished the flow. The obscurity of the story makes me want to find a happier one in typical YA literature. There were no grammatical errors, and there wasn't much criticism of the book at all.

"Opaque" is an interesting book with a novel theme. It struggles with pace at times and leaves many elements undeveloped, but it is about the essence of self-discovery and the beauty of the unseen world. "Opaque" provides you with a YA adventure that is more suggestive than it is spoon-fed, so it may be the translucent gem that you have been looking for.
