A rare mutation is hidden within a family's genetic code, granting each member the power to manipulate matter. Unknown to a 16-year-old boy, this dormant ability also lies within him. It takes a new friend to awaken his latent powers. As he delves deeper into his newfound abilities, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery and mastery, facing new challenges that will test his limits and force him to confront the reality of his hidden bloodline.

Opaque by Cālix Leigh-Reign is the story of Adam, a young teenager. He is attracted to Carly, a new girl from Minnesota. Adam has an accident and almost loses his life. After the accident, Adam is determined to find out who his birth parents are. JoAnn, his adoptive mother, tells him that she knows nothing about his birth parents and that she is bound by a contract never to investigate his origin. Carly promises to help him. Thus, Adam embarks on a journey to discover his ancestry.

This book is engaging, and the author uses imagery to paint pictures in the reader's mind. Seeing the characters interact and engage in different activities makes me imagine scenes from movies like Merlin and The Legend of the Seeker. The way most characters energize their cores speaks volumes of the sci-fi and magical elements of the book. If this book is placed in the sci-fi category, it will do well.

I couldn't help but be captivated by how the author presented the characters' abilities. Even with Adam's ability to control matter, his naivety showed occasionally. Some characters also had more than one ability. For instance, Carly had healing powers and could merge with her mother, Dauma. I liked how Adam's humanity shined through. Most young people in his shoes would want to trace their ancestry when they notice something is out of place with their immediate family. Ultimately, this gave the book a realistic appeal.

I like the book's internal designs. The flowery headers and footers give the book a magical feel. This shows the author's intentionality. Every part of the book contributes to the effect the author wants to create in the reader's mind. Young readers will be engaged from start to finish.

I like everything about this book. As the first installment in the Scion Saga series, it perfectly prepares the ground for other books in the series with its well-executed cliffhanger. I'll check out the other books in the series. Seeing that the book is fantastic and the editing is professionally done, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. If you enjoy magical adventures, this book is for you.
