Review of Opaque
Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is an interesting young adult series that takes readers on an adventure-filled journey filled with challenges, bravery, and determination. The book is about the lives of 16-year-olds Adam and Carly, who embark on an adventure that reveals their unknown supernatural abilities.
From the beginning of the book, Adam’s character seemed to me to be an aggressive one. He often burst out in anger whenever anyone attempted to interact with him. However, I am impressed by his character of self-control, such as how he respects Carly and resists the temptation to take advantage of her despite his desires. This portrayal of Adam’s character by the author brings complexity to the storyline. Carly’s unusual bravery in the face of challenging situations, even as a female character, was an aspect that I appreciated. The author’s way of portraying her as a courageous and determined individual challenged traditional gender stereotypes and provided a role model that young readers can emulate.
The suspense throughout the book was a little bit frustrating and interesting at the same time. I found myself reluctant to put the book down, expecting the next plot twist. One such moment that left me on the edge of my seat was the plan to rescue Carly’s father from the bondage of the Iksha, an elite but murderous group of scientists determined to exterminate the Descendants. The author's imaginative storytelling style is intriguing, and I am taken aback by the countless unexpected turns incorporated into the story.
I rate this book five out of five stars. Including pictures throughout the book not only provided a visual representation of Adam and Carly in my mind, but this offered a much-needed break for my eyes from the continuous text. The smooth narration created a joyful experience, making me feel as though I were a part of the characters’ world. I appreciate the careful editing of the book. It contributed to an engaging and seamless reading experience for me. The author’s attention to detail made my time with the book enjoyable. I did not notice any negatives in the book. From the beginning, I felt captivated by the story and found myself glued to the pages, unable to put the book down until the very end.
I recommend this book to anyone looking for an exciting and thought-provoking young adult series. The author’s ability to weave complex plotlines, complex characters, and high-stakes action into a narrative makes this book a must-read for fans of the genre. Whether you’re a young reader or an adult looking for an adventure-filled narrative, this book promises to take you on an unforgettable journey filled with supernatural touches and a determination to overcome challenges at all costs.
