Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is a page-turning book that will keep readers hooked the whole way. It is a combination of fantasy, sci-fi, romance, and a little bit of a thriller. When reading this book, readers get transported into the world of Adam and Carly and very vividly imagine themselves being there. It is a perfect book for people who liked Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, and for those looking for a book that has a similar feeling to Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan, but geared for an older audience. Opaque tells the story of powerful Russian ancestry lines, with genetic mutations which allow them to possess special characteristics. The setting of it is in the real world, specifically, in a city called Piure, in California. Reading Opaque creates a journey that readers will take, where each page provokes more questions about the characters, plot, and everything else. As the book goes on, these questions get answered as new ones arise, keeping readers hooked and entertained. It starts out a little slow and there are some confusing aspects to it, but as the reader travels further into the journey, the plot picks up speed, sucking readers in.
Overall, I would give this book a three star rating out of five. As you get deeper into the story, it becomes more interesting, but in the beginning, there is enough confusing and odd stuff that might make the reader put the book down and wonder, Does this book really match the blurb on the back? but later on, it starts to make more sense. Also, the dialogue and writing style wasn’t the greatest, Sometimes it seemed like the conversations were written by an aspiring middle school author. There were a few typos in the story overall, but none that would impede reading, just an added quotation mark once or twice. The story line of this book has great potential, it is really intriguing. A few changes could be made to make it a better book, like a more advanced dialogue structure, and maybe cutting out/adapting some parts in the beginning that didn’t add to the story, they just made it more confusing.
This book did have some romantic aspects to it, so it would probably be best suited for the young adult category. All in all, this is a fairly decent read if you are looking for a sci-fi/fantasy romance that will hook you in.
