Incandescent is a young adult fantasy novel written by Shannon Avangeline and is the first book of the Coven of Light Series. The novel is told predominantly in the first person POV of Addison Paige Thorton, a 16 year old girl whose mother moves the family to live with their grandmother in North Carolina after a divorce. The reader is also given Lucian “Luc” Burke’s first person POV to provide insight to the storyline.
Starting over at a new school, Paige thinks her only worry is not fitting in with peers at school and having trouble with homework. However, Paige quickly learns that she comes from long line of special women who fight to save mankind, known as guardhians. Guardhians in her coven are gifted with magick from the Angel Argia. To complicate her life even more, Paige meets bad boy Luc, who she feels intensely for, but he is also hiding secrets that could endanger her and her family.
I rated Incandescent 3 out of 4 stars. This book had very few, if any, grammatical errors, which is always great with new authors. I also enjoyed how the author tried to pull in multiple myths (witch and vampire) to create a new storyline. The story moved very quickly and was very easy to read, which is always good for young adult genre.
I am a huge fan of young adult and fantasy novels, but unfortunately I could not feel the connections or emotions in this novel like I did in so many others. The relationship between Paige and Luc is too sudden and never develops enough for me to care about them as a couple. The characters and storyline felt rushed and incomplete at times, which prevented depth or emotion to come from the story. Another reason I did not give the book 4 stars was because the dialogue between characters was very stiff and often took me out of the story instead of pulling me in.
I would recommend Incandescent to fans of young adult fantasies looking for a quick read. The story revolves around vampires and witches, but adds a unique spin to the myths that I really appreciated. Often this genre follows the same outline, but with Incandescent, I felt the author tried to put a twist on the normal themes.
While I felt Incandescent was lacking in some areas, I enjoyed the writing style and unique twists. I also felt the epilogue set up the series to grow and it made me interested in seeing where the author will go with the books. Fans looking for a young adult book with fantasy will enjoy this book.
