I rate the book Grim Knights by author D.R. Martin a 2 out of 4 and/or a 3 out of 5. The story started off very slow and confusing. Each of the first 3-4 chapters changed settings and characters and they were not relating to one another. Upon further reading the characters did mostly intertwine, except for a few that I still don’t understand their purpose. It does state in the introduction to the book that this is book 1 in a series and will be describing the characters and area. I assume that means these characters that are seemingly unrelated will appear later in future tales. I did enjoy the Grimsland setting. I wish there was a more personal feel. I think the story has a lot of potential to be beautiful and engaging but was a rather dry read. The story is written in 3rd person point of view, which is fine, except that I think that may have been a hindrance to the personal feel of the story. Had it been written in 1st person point of view the reader could feel how Howl felt during his time with the “hoomans” and how the King or Bolder felt during battle and after Howl left. This slight change in the writing style could have taken this book to a new level. I feel it also lacked some details in areas where details were needed and gave too many details in areas where details weren’t necessarily needed. For example, there are a great many details describing the ranks and titles and so on of the characters (Somme River Bridge Guard, Joint Rodent Recon, Shore Patrol and many others) which after their first introduction are simply abbreviated (SRBG, JRR, SP or whatever else) and I of course can’t remember what the abbreviations stand for so it makes no difference to me whether they are appropriately titled further on. There could have been more time and detail spent describing the battles and the planning the Grimsland folks set forth. This would have been more interesting detail in my opinion. Overall, it wasn’t a terrible read but I did have to force myself to finish it.
