Opaque, the first book of the Scion Saga by Calix Leigh-Reign is a fast-paced YA science fiction. Calix builds a wonderful plot around genomic mutation, ancestry, coming of age, survival, and secrets.

Adam, a sixteen-year-old lives with his parents in Piure. He appears to be slightly unhinged and has a lot of darkness within himself. He has a weird obsession with his mother and tends to despise every other human except her and often refers to them as animals. Since turning sixteen he has been experiencing a lot of changes in his body. Heightened emotions are often followed by nose bleeds, his Limbal Ring getting transparent, and a strange heat inside his body that does not seems to burn him. Enters Carly, a smart and confident teen who has recently shifted from Minnesota to Piure and joined Adams School. She is biokenretic and a descendant. Biokeneretic abilities are fueled by one’s genetic mutation, this mutation was only found in seven bloodlines in Russia and these people are often referred to as descendants. Iksha a scientific community is capturing and exterminating people from these bloodlines, it is to escape from them that Carly shifted to Piure. Adam who despises everyone experiences an attraction to Carly and loves her cinnamon apple scent. Carly is also insanely attracted to Adam, both Carly and Adam do not know the reason for this strange and sudden attraction. Will Carly be able to save Adam from the darkness within him? Will Adam and Carly be able to fight Iksha? What is the reason for the sudden changes in Adam?

The mystery in Opaque is like The Matryoshka doll set, inside one there is another one waiting to be explored. Calix has mastered the art of storytelling and keeping the audience engaged. The editing of the book is impressive.

Calix gives the pov of both characters throughout the book which provides great insight into the working of their brain and makes the characters relatable and easier to understand. Carly is no damsel in distress, she is intelligent, witty, and knows how to protect herself as well as her loved ones. Adam is no pushover and is not emotionally closed off. He knows what he wants and how to get it. He knows his flaws and works on them. Their character development throughout the book is phenomenal. The relationship between the is well-developed and not at all rushed.

Opaque is both character and plot-driven. It is hard to put the book down. Calix has done a tremendous job with his writing; the book did not disappoint in any aspect.

For me, the book is 5 out of 5. It was hard to put the book down. I loved the book so much that I bought the sequel, Split Adam instantly. I would recommend the book to all those people who love YA mixed with science and strong characters.
