This book was not at all what I was expecting. Opaque turned out to be much better. Adam is a young man facing obstacles he doesn’t understand. This leads him down a terrifyingly dark path. It gets progressively worse until a new girl shows up for school. Her name is Carly and they instantly connect. Carly helps and supports Adam until he is ready to learn more. Discovering where he came from and the community he belongs to opens Adam’s mind. Carly is so strong and capable throughout the story and the love she shares with Adam blossoms beautifully. The ending was done perfectly and made me want more of the story.

I did enjoy the questioning beginning. The more I read, the more I worried for the characters. The build of Adams' seemingly inevitable downfall was believable and suspenseful. The characters all grew so much mentally. Adam had the largest change in his personality and it was rewarding to read. The boy in the beginning was the opposite of the man in the end. Carly also impressed me with her overall strength. She is going through more than Adam at most times and she handles it all with grace.

I would have enjoyed more time with the supporting characters. Multiple were added later in the book but not given the time to truly get to know any of them. The only other criticism would be that only a few adults are sensible, the rest seem to be too old to understand or they just want to be younger. This unrealistically, in my opinion, leaves a group of teenagers to fight for freedom.

This novel gets 4 out of 5 stars from me. I enjoyed the story and the twists and turns it took me down. The genetic possibilities in the novel were interesting and brought out amazing powers and intriguing action scenes. Calix Leigh-Reign wrote an incredible story with characters I would like to get to know. This novel was edited very well with little to no errors. I would recommend this book to any young adult and even those older who enjoy a fantasy hidden under our noses. I can’t wait to finish the trilogy and see where the story takes each character.
