Grim Knights is a fantasy book that follows a number of characters and groups, including Grim, a hooman wizard who can turn into a dog, and two of his children. These children, Howl and Ash, both have magical powers and Ash is usually in his wolf form, though he can also be a squirrel. They are working to help protect their lands from a dragon, while there is also a takeover happening.

Overall, I found the book to be a little tedious. Everything is painstakingly described, even if it has no bearing on the actual story. Every chapter has a new perspective and while some are repeated, it's a LOT to follow along with. You're learning about dozens of new characters, their entire history is described, and then more characters are introduced, making it rather difficult to keep track of everyone. On top of this, not all the characters are terribly important to the story, so you learn all the information only to find that it didn't really matter.

The basic premise of the book is a good one. The story of Grim and his children is fascinating and I really enjoyed reading about how he arrived in this world and became so important. Howl is a charming character that I enjoyed and though he's young, he has a lot of wisdom in his small head. However, the story didn't feel like it really started until I was halfway through the book. That's when it started to become more of a real story, instead of endless descriptions. From there, it became far more exciting and we really get to see what Howl is doing.

If you enjoy fantasy, this is a good story, once you get into the second half. The book is well-edited and the writing flows well. I give it a 3 out of 5.
