High Clowder Cats by Ruby Knight is a story about feral cats and how they work together to make a family. In the beginning, a lonely kitten, Bushytail, joins a group of Tom cats and they become close like a family. Then tragedy hits and they all go their separate ways. I had a hard time following the beginning of the book and was unclear on some descriptions the author shared. Since this book is written from the perspective of a cat, Bushytail, I tried to follow along as if the words were being described by a cat. I thought a cat may not understand the human world or human vocabulary.
After reading several chapters, I became more intrigued with the plot. In this book, Bushytail, changes from the beginning of the story with the help of another character, Bristle. Bristle is a mentor and helps Bushytail grow into a wise Tom cat. I enjoyed reading about the positive changes in Bushytail. As the main character, Bushytail becomes a great leader in the clowder and has many difficult choices to make in order to keep the clowder safe.
I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
