Review of Grim Knights (The Grim Chronicles Book 1)
Two primary kingdoms separated by mountain peaks are dependent on each other. Grim Knights (The Grim Chronicles Book 1) by D. R. Martin narrates a tale of border clashes between the kingdoms of Bowden and Calderaun. The Bowden kingdom is situated high behind the Sig mountains. The book begins with the two kings trying to ascertain and come to terms with their dependence and the possible reasons for the border clashes. A possible marital alliance is one of the probable solutions. Then there is Grim, the wizard and Prime leader of Grimsland ( read the mountains); the animals consider him the ancient hooman.
The Wizard Grim accidentally lands in this realm and is unable to open the portal to return home to his reality. After many failed attempts, he makes it his home. He cohabitates with the animals and finds the meaning of life. In this tale, Grim sends his son to the kingdom of Bowden to assure them that the Wizard Grim will help them fight Takori, the dragon. He is also mobilizing the animals on the mountain and preparing them for war. As a reader, you are intrigued to know why a wizard is playing this double game and risking his son's life.
I chose this book because the description said it is aimed at HP, LOTR and Narnia fans. The story of this book is quite simple but the presentation confuses you to no end. It takes a while to understand that the spies they are talking about are mice, beavers, eagles, bears, wolves, and squirrels who work together under the able leadership of Bur.
At times it is difficult to decipher the sentence because the mice converse in codes and strange abbreviations. Once you get the hang of it, the story is easy to follow. I had a tough time looking up the expansion of abbreviations like NCOs, BGs, SBU, and MOS, because they appear suddenly, and you are left wondering if you read them earlier. Initially, I doubted that some of the sentences had grammatical errors but dismissed them because the conversational skills of animals cannot be perfect. Moreover, the errors were not serious. I spotted a few simple typo errors and have listed them.
Except for a few typos, this book amuses the reader with its funny animal language and good illustrations. The tale depicts how the animals think, emote, and worship nature. Opposingly, humans invent ways to destroy Mother nature to satiate their greed for metals and gems. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars for engaging the reader with an intriguing narrative of the wizard who sends his children on a dangerous mission.
If you expect a spectacular tale like HP, you may be disappointed by its pace. But, once you understand that the animals are united with a single motive and place their trust in an ancient hooman (read, the wizard, Grim), you want to know where this story leads.
