Emmie of Indianapolis by Kay Castaneda is a young adult fiction that even adults will enjoy reading. The novel is set in the Mid-western town of Indianapolis in the 1960’s. Emmie is forced to move from her family home in the suburbs to an apartment in the city when her parents get a divorce. Emmie is a strong willed and intelligent girl. This story is about her experiences in a new place that has both its ups and downs.

Emmie’s mom takes a job at night leaving her with the responsibility of caring for her sister’s while she is at work. Many unexpected things can happen when a couple of kids are left home. It sounds like it would be fun and games to have the house to yourself but things don’t always pan out like they are supposed to and that is what makes this story relatable. Life gets sticky sometimes and the author does a great job of showing the realistic struggles from a child’s point of view.

Friendship, family, community, and spirituality are main themes throughout this story. Emmie meets and becomes friends with lots of children from different ethnic and social backgrounds. Emmie and her group of friends are resourceful and stick together when things got tough. She discovers on her adventures how important and supportive family can be. Emmie sees how positive people in the community can be a great asset in life. Emmie is open to trying different churches and taking a spiritual path through her community to find the one that fits her and in a unique way. I really enjoyed that the author showcased that spirituality is an individual experience even as a child that grows and develops over time.

I loved the diversity of culture melding into one community in this book. Emmie experiences different cultures that each had their own spiritual and cultural traditions. It was great to see that she could experience many different cultures and assimilate them into her own heritage. Emmie ran into some bad people as well as good ones. It was refreshing to read a book with a character that was loving and helpful to people no matter what their background was.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Adults that have gone through some of these experiences and even children that have not will appreciate Emmie’s point of view. No matter what your age is this book reminds you how important the bonds of family and friends are. It is a great story about a not so perfect childhood that just makes you stronger.
