Heroes of Atlantis, the first book in the Legend of the Dragon series, is adventurously set in the days of the Neanderthal. With dragons and other unique, mythical creatures pertinent to that age. Ryan Carriere brings his narrative to life in the reader's mind through his writing and maps, adding exceptional illustrations of the main characters and creatures placed throughout the storyline. The hierarchy of the clans and the necessity for one misfit boy to prove himself are very much at the saga's core. The city of Atlantis is such a legend itself that the mere mention of it inspires our imagination instantly. Carriere takes us into that extraordinary city by describing its architecture and the potential purposes behind its design.

I have reviewed several novels and have needed help from time to time using a dictionary for complex terminology. That was not the case in this instance. I immediately recognized the significance of the straightforward wording in this book, with some added linguistic challenges, making it enjoyable. Reading just a few pages, I also knew great care was demonstrated in editing this work. Seeing the Author does both the writing and the illustrations further adds to its verisimilitude and recognition that this was a labor of love and incredible talent.

I was not ready for the story to end. It had been some time since I had reviewed such a short story. I know it will continue in the next installment, but I would have liked to have seen this book be a little longer. I would have also enjoyed more information about Atlantis, whether fictional or otherwise.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I give it four stars because it should have been longer. This was a very well-edited read. I also found no evidence of profanity, sexual content, or mention of religion. I read this with my children, and they did very much enjoy it.

Ryan Carriere, I'm sure, is experiencing a feeling of nikhedonia as he continues writing this series. This storyline would be an excellent way to introduce young tweens to the world of science fiction and fantasy through reading. Therefore this book is appropriate for very young readers aged 11 and up. Perhaps younger if read to them by an adult. I appreciated the illustrations and believe they enhanced my experience. I am sure they will fire the imaginations of the future young impressionable fans that Ryan will undoubtedly encounter.
