BROKEN:Book 1 by Braxton A. Cosby is a book set in a post-apocalyptic world. This book follows the story of Keesa Donovan and her younger brother Kiran, who is the only family she has left along with her uncle Raymond. Keesa resents her uncle for not looking for her father after the war, resulting in them being separated from her father and they do not know whether he is dead or alive. They find themselves slaves to the Establishment, living in slave pods. Life is difficult for the slaves and they witness and also go through many atrocities and unfair treatment, while The Enforcers live like royalty. Through all the injustices they face, friendships are formed and bonds are made. Keesha shares her slave pod with her friends Wynn and Arisa, who is an older female and also her guardian. They take care of each other and look out for one another. They dream of freedom from The Establishment and a better life for all in the future. Keesa is offered the opportunity to live a slightly more privileged life than the other slaves, but her loyalty affects her choice. Although many dangers lie beyond the walls of the Establishment, a plan is hatched to escape, but will it be worth it?

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and found it very difficult to tear myself away. What I loved most about the book was the pace. The author writes the story in such a way that you feel so invested in the adventures of Keesa Donovan and her friends and there are plenty of action-filled scenes that keep you hooked. Keesa has faced so many losses and her spirit remains so strong that you cannot help falling in love with her strength. I look forward to reading Book 2.

The only thing that I did not like about this book was that it needs some editing for the errors. We also need clarity as to when and how the main character's mom died. At first, it is written that she died giving birth to Kiran, who is Keesa's younger brother, but then later on there is mention of how she would console Kiran when he was upset, by making him hot chocolate. Kiran himself, mentions that one of the memories he has of his mom was that she cried tears of joy when she was happy.

Because of the many errors, I would give the book a 3 out of 4 stars. It is an interesting read for young adults who love fiction and adventure. The book has violence and no sexual content besides kissing.
