Adam Caspian is an ordinary 16-year-old boy according to anyone he meets however; Adam knows he is different. He is repulsed by everyone in his life - save for his mother who he is in love with – going so far as to refer to them as ‘animals’. Knowing he is more than the regular boy everyone sees him as; Adam yearns to find out his true identity. He struggles with this until he meets Carly Wit, fellow 16-year-old new to his home town of Piure, California. Adam sees something in Carly, finding it strange that instead of being repulsed by her he is drawn to her.

Carly was moved out of her hometown of Minnesota by her parents for her own safety. We learn that Carly is descended of a Russian bloodline with mutated genetics, giving her special abilities. Her and her family are being hunted by an organization seeking to end all bloodlines with this mutated gene. Adam and Carly, being inexplicably drawn to each other, begin dating and soon discover they have much more in common than anyone could have ever guessed. Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is a fantasy story so full of action it will have you on the edge of your seat.

Being an avid fantasy reader, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found the storyline and plot to be unique and intriguing. I thought, it being a story about two teenagers, it may feel a bit young for me. However, it was the perfect mix of teen angst and high stakes. The author has a way of writing about the characters that makes them seem aware of the severity of what they are going through and the reader can truly care about what is happening to them. I can’t say I enjoyed this book from the very beginning as I found it to be quite slow-going at the start. However once the story picked up and we met Carly I was captured until the very end.

While I found the beginning of the book to be slightly boring, I instantly changed my mind when the action started. I am so invested in these characters’ lives and what happens to them that I can’t wait to go on to read the next book. The editing seemed to be professionally done making my experience reading this book all the more enjoyable. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.

I would recommend this book to fantasy readers who enjoy fast-paced books centred on teenagers/young adults as I think this story has the perfect amount of fantasy to keep them entranced. I believe this book would be better suited to older and more mature readers as there are sexual themes and strong language throughout.
