Broken: The Young Hellions Series - Book 1 by Braxton A. Cosby is set in a world that was devastated by an apocalyptic nuclear war. Keesa Donovan is a slave living in a settlement outside the city of Savannah. Her life is a constant struggle in this new world that suddenly came upon her and her younger bother, Kiran. She must find the strength to protect her family and friends, and fight to achieve their ambition to regain their freedom, and escape from the clutches of the new world's dictators, called the Establishment. But the world outside of the Establishment might be filled with other dangers that could jeopardize their dreams.

The world in this book is so uniquely captured, that sets it apart from the usual post- apocalyptic stories. I love how the surviving people have adapted to the fall of mankind, each in their own different ways. Some use the remnants of the lost world to find a new way of living, while others go back to the natural ways of living. The fact that the war that ended the world was started by the Russians invading Ukraine, is a small detail that makes the story even more agitating.

My favourite aspect of the book is the characters. The writer made extraordinary work of describing each character’s features and individuality so perfectly, that you will be picking favourites in no time. Keesa, is a fiery and inspiring young female and her brother, Kiran, is the perfectly adorable younger brother who tries his best to be brave for everyone. Wynn has his own kind of philosophical wisdom, who can always be counted on for a laugh, and Aris is the older sister that Keesa never had. Dobbs is my all time favourite with his, and I quote, “ghetto- fabulous lingo”. The growth that Keesa has shown throughout the story is remarkable. With every single thing she goes through you can see the way it changes her. She matured from being a child that has nearly lost her will to fight, to becoming a strong leader, embracing the fire inside her.

There is just nothing about this book that I didn’t like. I even liked that the whole book is typed in a typewriter font and the story is told out of one person’s perspective, avoiding any unpleasant transitions between characters. Each chapter ends on the most anticipating point, making it impossible to stop reading.

This is why I am rating Broken - Book 1 by Braxton A. Cosby, a well earned 4 out of 4 stars. It is an excitingly tense story with vivid descriptions. I would recommend it for anyone in the mood for an adventurous post-apocalyptic story.
