Opaque: Scion Saga Book 1 by Calix Leigh-Reign is the first book in a young adult, science fiction series about two 16-year-olds named Adam and Carly. Adam is a troubled teen who struggles with inappropriate thoughts and feelings and he thinks there is something wrong with him. Adam’s life takes a turn when he meets a girl named Carly who shines light on what he is and opens his world to the impossible. Together, Carly and Adam discover more about the powerful descendants that they come from. They form strong friendships and allies among some of the other descendants and together they decide to track down the scientists who have been torturing and killing their families for generations.

I liked that the author gave so much detail in the book and really helped the reader to get to know the characters. Although the book focuses mostly on Adam and Carly, there were a lot of other supporting characters in the book as well and you really get attached to particular people.

I wasn’t sure about the beginning of the story because it was slightly confusing as to what was happening. The story doesn’t get into the science fiction portion for a while. The thing that I, personally, liked the least was that it felt too similar to the Twilight series as well as the Netflix show Stranger Things. I feel like the author mixed the two and came up with this story. Twilight and Stranger Things are each one of my favorite books and shows respectively. I thought that the author could’ve done a better job at making the story more original.

All in all, I would give the book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The book was well written and seemed professionally edited. I didn’t find many errors at all. Even though I thought the author made this too similar to Twilight and Stranger Things, I think that is one reason why I liked it so much; because I loved both that series and show, this book was right up my alley. There was not much profanity, but in the beginning of the book Adam does kidnap a young girl with some nasty intentions.

I would recommend this book to the young adult crowd who enjoys science fiction and fantasy books, especially those who enjoyed books like Twilight. I wouldn’t stop at young adults though, as many adults have enjoyed the same books! Anyone who enjoys fantasy novels with superhero-type powers would enjoy this book as well. I can’t wait to read the next book in the Saga!
