Opaque by CALIX LEIGH-REIGN is an urban fantasy novel. Adam is a teenage boy who finds it hard to blend in with people until he meets Carly. They form an instant connection and slowly fall in love. Adam later discovers he is one of the descendants of the genetically mutated families along with Carly. As though having discovered new supernatural abilities was not enough, he now must face a group of men called Iksha who are determined to eliminate them. Will he be able to master his abilities and face the Iksha? Will he be able to discover his identity?

This is the first book of the series. During the first half of the book, the author is trying to build the character of the lead protagonist. When I first started reading the book, I thought I might not like it, but I still gave it a try. The author did not disappoint me. The author starts slowly with an introduction and a love story and gradually moves towards revenge. Even though the book includes major events in Adam’s life, it did not feel fast-paced. Adam is a sociopath, and his love interest is the complete opposite of his character. She is caring, friendly, and loving. The way both Adam and Carly go out of their comfort zone to maintain their relationship is admirable. The lead hero in this novel is not a typical good guy and has many flaws which the author did not sugar-coat while writing. His character develops slowly and by the end, is one of the best. Carly on the other hand is a strong independent woman and the story revolves around them both.

Many people might find the dark aspects of Adam’s character before he met Carly uncomfortable while reading. Like how he experienced sexual attraction towards his mother is quite disturbing. The author, however, later justifies the feeling. The other thing which I did not like is that even though Carly is strong and realistic, she did not confront Adam about his dark deeds and moves along with them. Apart from that, the book is exquisite.

The book was professionally well edited. I will give this book four out of four stars. This is because, even after a few issues with Adam’s character, which the author later explains, I am completely in love with the book.

I will recommend this book to people looking for a fantasy novel with a negative lead.
