Since he can remember, Adam has had a strong dislike for his father, his classmates, and humanity as a whole. His only salvation has been his mother. While she has been the safety in the darkness, his feelings for her haven’t always been familial. He feels the darkness about to devour him until a ray of light walked into his English class and completely changes his life. After learning he is the last surviving member of a powerful line of genetically mutated descendants, will he continue the dark path he is on? Or can he overcome the darkness and find the light Carly’s love can offer?

Carly is sent to live with her aunt in Piure California for her senior year of school. Running for her safety, she never expected to meet her soul mate. Now Carly has a decision to make. Will She open her heart to this dark soul that makes her heart flutter? Can she tell him the truth about who she is and why she is running?

Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is a character-driven young adult fantasy novel. While angst-filled and bittersweet, Reign’s characters are diverse, complex and well-developed. The Scion saga continues with Split Adam and Specular.

Being a unique and engaging novel, it has multiple likable characters. My favorite character is Dauma. While this novel abounds with strong female characters, Dauma’s character shines most as the loving mother and exceedingly powerful descendant. I enjoy how she leads and teaches both Adam and Carly to control their powers and emotions. Conversely, my least favorite character is Mark. When his double life comes to light, his true selfish character is discovered.

I rate Opaque: Scion Saga Book One 3 out of 4. Although I enjoyed reading this novel, there are multiple missing and extra spaces in words and paragraphs. Being small they did not interfere with reading. Readers should be aware of vague mentions of sexual assault, while not graphic, it is there. Finding low amounts of offensive language, I can happily recommend Opaque to young adult readers; teen to adult. If you decide to read this novel, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
