Heroes of Atlantis: Legend of the Dragon Runes by Ryan Carriere is the first book in the Heroes of Atlantis series. It follows the two main characters Roeg and Sephonei as they embark on dangerous journeys to discover the truth and prove themselves. On one hand, Roeg must try to prove to his clan that he is not useless after all. On the other, Sephonei must retrieve the prized Dragon Runes or die trying.

The story provides well fleshed out characters; both the main characters have desires and fears. Roeg wanted to prove himself to his clan but he was not this know-it-all. He feared death and often regretted his decisions, leading to comedic situations. As for Sephonei, she was not fearless and perfect from the beginning. She learned to fight and defend herself as the book progressed. My favorite characters were Ku-aya and Abil, working alongside Sephonei, thus providing contrasting opinions and fun banter. The book also offers beautiful world-building in the form of fantastical creatures like giants and dragons and places like the Sea of Atlantis. There are illustrations every time a new character is introduced, revealing the beautiful character designs.

On the other hand, I wish that the author kept Roeg as 'ordinary'. What I mean by that is that instead of him having any powers, as mentioned in the prologue itself, I wish that he could've grown stronger through sheer hard work. It would've been inspiring and made us root for him more by giving him an actual 'underdog' feeling. Other than that, there were some silly mistakes in terms of the editing. For example, the plural noun for the fantastical creature nightprowl'r often switched between nightprowl'r's and nightprowl'rs. Or even in the line, '...the succulent fatty bits of the "smallwalk'r's".'

With both the positive and negative points of the book out there, I would say that it was a good read. I look forward to the next installment of the series despite it having its hiccups here and there. All in all, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.

Lastly, I would recommend this book to lovers of fantasy and adventure-filled books looking for a quick read. You may enjoy this if you want to crack open a new series without being burdened by too many subplots. Happy Reading!
