Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is an exciting young adult novel with an absorbing and striking plot which is sure to leave one wanting for more.

Adam appears to be a normal teenager. But it is all an act to blend in. He strongly believes that all other humans in his city are mere animals and is disgusted by them. His thoughts and actions point towards him being on the verge of becoming a sociopath. But everything changes when a new student, Carly, joins the school.

When the two of them are together, Adam feels understood and tries to be a better person for her. But with a great revelation, Adam realises that his whole life has been a lie. It is when he decides to find out the truth that he learns that Carly has a few secrets of her own. Secrets that influence Adam too.

As the story moves on, Adam realises that there is indeed a place for him in the world. He is grateful when he discovers that the monsters inside him aren’t really his own. With Carly’s help and a proper understanding of himself, Adam embraces his real self. But with these new beginnings, come new problems. Problems that threaten to destroy all those he holds dear.

The novel is gripping right from the start. Adam’s hateful behaviour towards everyone else, except his mother, and his strange choice of reading material, develop interest that wills you to keep on reading. Even though the first two chapters are shocking and a little disturbing, with time all the issues are resolved. This story perfectly illustrates how even good people have to take morally grey actions for the greater good.

The way the characters are described is amazing. The protagonist’s journey, from being a troubled teen who hates everyone to a relatively calm individual who cares for other’s well being as much as his own, is portrayed beautifully. What I loved the most about this book is the message that people who don’t understand themselves start to blame and hate everything around them. But when they are introduced to the truth and given proper guidance, they change for the better.
Apart from the weirdness in the earlier chapters(which later on makes sense), I couldn’t find anything that I would change about this book. The book is well edited with only one or two mistakes. There is some content which might be a little disturbing for some people.

I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Once I started reading the book, it became quite difficult for me to put it down. This book has thrill, suspense, emotions and sudden twists that no one sees coming. The ending doesn’t leave you hanging, but still leaves many questions unanswered, so that you have no choice but to read the next book in the series.

This book is a must read for all people who are intrigued by stories with super heroes and villains. I would recommend it to those who enjoy reading a nice young adult novel that makes extraordinary events seem real.
