Review of Wonks
This is a very unique kind of story from the history of world war. We have read so many things about world war but this story has a complete new perspective and experiences. Story is narrated by a twelve year old american boy named Johnny in Manila in philippines. It is story of world war two when japan sweeps into manila. Japanese soldier put the boy and his mother named ruth in the camp and story tells about their days in camp seperated from their father Mr. Oldfield. Who they think is working as guerrilla code named 'Geronimo'. Johnny lived there from 12 to 15 years of age. They face starvation, flooding, cruelty and death threat. Story is about when you are living in a closed space for indefinite time and things in surrounding are collapsing. This is a story of hope in the time when everything is pushing you in opposite way.
Wonk is based on author William Reese Hamilton's own experiences. There are so many characters in the story with their unique personalities, southy jack an ex boxer, polecast who is same age as him and Harry Barnes who is family friend and writer and when Johnny finds about Harry Barnes and his mother's relation his view of his mother changes. Incidents like violence, and strikes, hunger are shown and how we human react in such extreme situation. Writer has written so realistically that you would get to know everything about daily lives of people living in camp and this is unique about the narrative of this book that writer has written so humanly you will feel you are actually living that life with internees in camp. Finally when american arrives is the scene very beautiful in book where anyone will smile atleast for once.
An extraordinary circumstance is shown from the point of view of a kid, there are some deep wisdom told by boy but seems humorous because of his age.
Book is not engaging till chapter 7. People who don't know much about place and time from which story is they have to search by themselves to understand. I found only one typing error. I found thrice instances of vulgur languages still I think teenagers should read it because it's point of view of a teenager. Book is well edited. Therefore, I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars.
I will recommed this book to people who are going through tough times, they can learn from this book that how right perspective can help you in worst of times of your life. People who love history fiction should read this book. There are some incidents of threat and violence which some reader may find disturbing.
