Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is book one of the Scion Saga. The first book of the series focuses on introducing the main characters which are two teenagers, Adam and Carly. Adam is a perceived introvert that has feelings and perceptions that go against many societal norms. Carly is introduced as the new student at Adam’s high school. A teen romance blossoms between them after they begin to have feelings unique only to themselves. As the story progresses secrets begin to unfold about the origins of both the main characters and the world that they live in.

Opaque has many plot twists and open-ended storylines that contribute positively to the story. Adding these to the story keeps the reader actively engaged in the narrative and makes the reader want to move on to the second book of the series as quickly as possible to get answers. Also, this book was professionally edited which allows the reader to glide through the pages without interruption.

The narratives of the two main characters start and progress slowly. For me, it was tough to get thru the beginning of this book because it seemed the characters were being developed at a slow pace. This is my only negative for the book. Although I believe this to be a negative for me, I know that this is a series, and the two characters needed to be developed fully before thickening the plot for the remainder of the books.

I would recommend this book to a teenaged audience. The story focuses on teenagers going thru various teenage issues. However, these teenagers are quite different from your everyday teenager. Although, the teenagers in this book have special abilities they still deal with issues that are relatable to teenagers in everyday life making this book ideal for a teenaged audience.

I rate this book with 4 out of 4 stars. There is some sexual content in this book. However, I do not believe it should deter a parent from allowing their teenager to read it. I do believe that teenagers can gain a lot from this book and the circumstances the teenaged characters are faced with. For example, many of the characters are faced with crushes that go against what they believe to be acceptable to society. This one example is almost certainly familiar with all teenagers at one point in their lives. Overall, it was a very enjoyable read and I look forward to the next book in the series.
