Review by caruehlicke -- Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign
Throughout Opaque , written by Calix Leigh-Reign, Adam must face truths about his past and deal with a secret organization out to capture and murder him. Adam is just a normal teen boy with a secret attraction towards his adoptive mother until a girl named Carly arrives in Piure. She uncovers the mystery behind a girl gone missing and brings answers to Adam's questions regarding himself. Things get complicated when a person from Adam's school is found to be part of the organization out to hunt people like Adam and he has to trust in Carly to help him stop them.
In addition to the enthralling plot of the book, Opaque delivers a well-edited, well thought out story that draws in readers of many genres. What I like about this book is the switching between characters' points of view as it provides the reader with insights about the characters and thickens the plot. Furthermore, the way the book sets up an ongoing story is enticing for the reader because it gets the reader wanting more chapters. Even towards the end of the book, the author does a good job tying up the loose ends of the story while at the same time leaving questions to be answered in a sequel such as, what will happen to Vikki? and will Carly be able to pick up after her mother and take a leading role against the Iksha?
The only negative in the book was the way it could be perceived by readers, at least in the first few chapters. The beginning of the book starts with Adam being extremely and sexually attracted to his adoptive mother Jo while calling everyone around him animals. This connotation in the book could lead readers into thinking this is a psychopathic book instead of a fantasy book. This is not a bad aspect of the book but might be a red flag for some readers.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because the editing was almost flawless all while having an intriguing story and deep character analysis. The way the book starts out is not a deal-breaker for me because I enjoy books with some darker aspects. I also want to point out that this book delivers a good explanation of events while keeping the overall surprises well hidden throughout the book. This is why I rated this book as excellent.
There are only a couple of instances of profanity in the book and intimate scenes so I wouldn’t recommend this book to viewers under 13. However, I think that this book would be perfect for fantasy, romance, action readers between the ages of 15-19. This is because the book deals with teens going through a journey of self-revelation which would interest viewers of around the same age group.
