Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign, focuses on Adam Caspian and his struggle coming to terms with his anti-social personality, and his inexplainable behaviors that seem to go against everything that his hometown exudes. Opaque predominately takes place in Piure, California and Adam's primary focus is to blend in and go through the motions while attending a school that he often likens to prison. Adam is content being left alone until Carly, the new student from Minnesota, transfers to his school. Adam is inexplicably drawn to Carly and the bond that they forge leads them on a path of shocking discoveries that reveal truths from their past, and premonitions of what is to come.

I really enjoyed this book and thought the plot and characters were both extremely well developed. The story line increasingly picked up pace and kept the reader hooked and wanting to know more. I found that the characters were likable, and easy to picture whilst reading. The final thing that kept me hooked was the unexpectedness of the plot twist.

The one and only thing I did not particularly care for was the writing style. While I appreciated the author's creativity, the book was hard to understand at times. For example, the book has the characters conversing with typical dialogue and then the author adds in the inner thoughts of the character without necessarily indicating that fact. When first beginning the book, it made reading the novel a little disjointed, however, the plot was so well told, it was easy to adjust once you got going.

I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars . The book appeared to be professionally edited and had a strong narrative foundation that kept the reader wanting more. Another reason I rated this book highly is that it was easy to relate to the characters, and one could almost imagine this story being a big box-office success. Finally, I enjoyed that the book offered a fresh plot with unique ideas that are not oversaturated in popular literature.

This book is geared towards young adults, however, I feel that adults would also enjoy this book. I would recommend this novel to those that like mystery and intrigue, science-fiction, and those that enjoy supernatural elements peppered in with the illusion of an almost magical power. Finally, I would add the disclaimer that violence, torture, and rape are mentioned, albeit not in great detail, some may still find this upsetting.
