On Tania’s twelfth birthday, a magician who came to her party leaves behind his suitcase. What looks like a harmless little black box turns out to be the beginning of a mystical journey across time. Our clever and daring little heroine embarks on a thrilling adventure, with her new rabbit-friend called Mike. Her spontaneous yet brilliant choices radically change the course of history- or rather made history the way it was.

The Secret of Magic: The Forbidden Box written by Natassa Louppou is a wonderful choice of book for tweens who love adventure and history as the author takes us to different places through different time periods. I give this book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. What I liked most about the book was that the plot was interesting enough to keep me hooked to the end of the page without ever once wanting to drop it. The story was well-paced and the ending was pleasant as well. The twists and turns made the ride all the more enjoyable. The characters were intriguing; Tania was a brave, generous and kind-hearted young girl, whereas her friend, the rabbit named Mike was sassy and funny, creating a fun duo.

We get to meet more compelling characters throughout the book. It is not all just fun and games as the author also deals with bullying faced in school and gives Tania character development through that. Brownie points for pointing out serious issues like bullying and trying to teach the importance of standing up for one another.

All books have their imperfections and so does this one. The thing I disliked most about the book is the fact that while the book seems to be professionally edited, I would recommend it to be sent for another round of editing as there were plenty of punctuation errors, redundant words and awkward phrases that need to be fixed- which necessitated the deduction of a star. The blurb of the book may as well need some corrections as I found it to be slightly misleading. The blurb talks about a mysterious boy named Peter as if he is one of the main characters but we never get to meet this character in the entire book.

Overall, The Secret of Magic would be an excellent read for little time-travel enthusiasts and all story-loving children and adults alike. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did.
