Opaque is refreshingly unpredictable. The story begins with Adam: a moody, unsociable, and rather unstable teenager. Although some of his thoughts and actions are simply due to adolescence, others emerge as twisted and evil in nature. When Carly enters his life, Adam also appears to take control of an obsessive and unhealthy relationship. Throughout the book, Calix Leigh-Reigns' amazing character development explains Adam's dark desires and creates a deeper understanding of him for the reader.

Descendants of ancient Russian bloodlines have been captured by the Iksha. Adam and Carly must join their new-found friends to protect themselves and save those they love. Along the way, they discover family secrets of the past, access to amazing powers, and how to love unconditionally. Adam and Carly learn to deal with their extraordinary fates in order to live normal teenage lives.

This book deserves 4 out of 4 stars for several reasons. The writing is extremely intelligent; the vocabulary and language are on a higher level than most books, especially in the Young Adult category. The grammar is essentially error-free, and there is a very professional quality to the book as a whole. Descriptions of events are clear and detailed without being overdone. The plot moves at a good pace to keep the reader interested while increasing in complexity throughout the book. Although some small elements are reminiscent of other books, Opaque is a very original and creative story.

What I liked most about this book was how the characters grew and changed over time. Adam evolved into a new person overall, but did so in a well-timed and believable way. I also loved the unpredictability of the plot. I often feel like I figure out a lot of what will happen when I read, but this book surprised me several times.

What I disliked most about this book was the unnecessary use of some profanity. It was limited and relatively minor most of the time, but it seemed a little forced since it didn't seem to match the characters' regular way of speaking. That is one of the reasons I would not suggest this book for younger teens. Another is that some of the content and descriptions, although not vulgar or explicit, were pretty dark for younger readers. I would, however, definitely recommend Opaque to older teens and adults. This book contained a combination of superhero-style abilities, action, romance, and adventure. I think fans of fantasy, science-fiction, and the supernatural would enjoy this great read.
