The Secret of Magic by Natassa Louppou is an imaginative story about Tania, a little girl celebrating her birthday. We are whisked away through time on an adventure as she discovers the magic of a magician's suitcase. She and her partner in crime, Mike, a magician's rabbit, embark on her surprise adventure through historical events revolving around the day of her birth.

A whimsical story with life lessons, this book has its ups and downs. A bit rough in the beginning and end but finds redemption within her travels. It took a little bit to settle into the story telling. I would have liked to get a little more depth of introduction to our protagonist in the beginning of the story. The introduction seemed a little bumpy, like a plane taking off with a high wind, leveling off for a mostly smooth flight and then getting a bit rough in re-entry. Although the author wove in some of the lessons the main character learned on her adventures and applied it to her real world experiences in a classroom setting, standing up for a classmate that is getting bullied, it seemed a bit forced and under nuanced. The ending seems rather abrupt but the author could be leading into the next book in a series. Even if that is the case I would like to see the end slightly further developed.

The characters were likeable but could have used more development. I would have liked to learned a bit more about the main characters and to have seen more development through interactions between characters. The interactions between daughter and mother seem a bit stiff. We seem to be dropped right into a party at the onset of our story but learn very little of our character's personality. Tania is thin on charisma at the onset but develops as the story progresses.

Overall this little story is a little gem in the rough, but with a little more polish here and there it could turn out to be a nice series for 10 to 13 year old children. There is potential for world building that could span over a few books and I enjoyed her timely adventures most. If character development can be fleshed out so that the reader can really become invested in their endeavors With the opening and closing leaving the most to be desired I disliked them the most. I did not notice any grammatical errors that distracted from the story. I would rate it a 2 out of 4 with potential. Hopefully this author continues their journey forward and develops their style of storytelling in future books.
