Review by Mokgabudi Matome -- Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign
The writer has penned a great story that is worthy of the time the reader gives the book. The book is full of an unexpected journey that takes one on an imaginative world. Opaque tells a story of a young man going through puberty and he feels lost in the world he is in. Calix Leigh-Reign has made it impossible for the reader to put the book down because of his good writing skills. The writer’s storytelling is admirable. The book is hard to put down once it is paged through from one page to the next.
In this book we are introduced to a young man who is going through feelings that he does not understand. He has an urge to sleep with her mom who at a later stage we will learn that she is not her biological mom. He is disappointed when his dad is present but loves alone time with her everyday when she takes him to school. At school there’s a young lady who is clearly in love with him, but he does not love her. One day a new girl comes to their class and things take an interesting turn. Even though he loves his own space during lunch time, but this time around he is not angry that the new girl is there with him during lunch.
After some few days he has spent some time with the new girl he no longer felt the urge he previously had of wanting to sleep with his mom. This young man by the name of Adam got into an accident while saving his mom and that is when after he woke up learnt that he is adopted. Upon investigations with the help of his girlfriend he learnt the truth that he possesses a certain power that other humans around him do not have an exception being the girlfriend. The truth now put him in a difficult position because people who possessed powers like him where in danger.
I rate the book 4 out of 4. It deserves the rating because it is well edited. The storyline also plays a vital part to the rating. The writer has also taken much care to have the chapter as minimal as possible so the reader could enjoy the book. I did not like the part where the woman who had played a vital part in helping Adam find himself had to give up her life even though it was for the benefit of the group. I liked how the young man and woman joined to fight the enemy rather than hide away like their leaders had done for the past years.
The book speaks mostly to teenagers. It shows them how it feels like growing up in a world where it is not easy to be understood because of the challenges they are facing. It has little profane words that makes it even better that young children could also enjoy. It is a book that does not want someone who lacks imagination. It could also be enjoyed by anyone because it does not belittle any religion. To those who love fictional stories this book is a definite must read for them.
