Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is a sumptuous read. Filled with exquisitely described scenes and people, it’s easy to get carried away into Leigh-Reign’s world. One doesn’t have to try hard to “see” Leigh-Reign’s vision. Beautiful descriptions captivate the reader and pull them into the story.

Adam, a 16 year old boy lusting after his mother, believes himself to be a wolf among sheep. When the stunning Carly joins Adam’s class, he is entranced. Clearly there is something between them as they both feel physical reactions to each other’s presence. Their relationship very quickly blossoms into something deeper than either has felt before. Soon Adam learns that he is adopted and that he and Carly are descended from extinct Russian bloodlines. What follows is an exciting journey, discovering Adam’s past and building their future. Adam has to choose between light and dark, love and hate. Carly has to teach Adam who he is and help him make his choice, without making the choice for him.

I give Opaque 4 out of 4 stars. The story is compelling, and while Adam is not always the most likeable character, you find yourself eagerly devouring more. I love Leigh-Reign’s world-building and the vivid descriptions. That being said, the tense is a little strange at times, and at first I stumbled over it. Ultimately, I don’t feel that the sometimes odd tense took anything away from the story, but it was definitely a bit unusual.

Opaque has danger, with the Iksha constantly trying to exterminate the Descendants, intrigue, romance, and mystery. Everything you could want from a great young-adult novel. I would definitely recommend young-adult audiences or older read Opaque. There are many references to sex and sexual content that would be inappropriate for younger audiences. While the main characters are teens, I’m not sure I would give this to a young teen to read.

I found no typos in Opaque, which is a rare thing indeed. The book was clearly expertly edited and reads well. I enjoyed every minute spent reading Opaque. I will likely add Calix Leigh-Reign to my list of authors that I enjoy as a result of reading this book. This is a top-notch book! I loved the plot, I loved the characters, though Adam is frequently less than lovable, and I loved the vividness of Leigh-Reign’s world. Leigh-Reign leaves you wanting more, and I am excited to pursue the next installment.
