Review by Shatakshi Gauriar -- Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign
Calix Leigh-Reign’s Opaque is a scientific thriller, which stars Adam Angle Caspian, a teenager, whose mind is having quite dark thoughts. He secretly fantasizes about his mom and considers himself to be a monster to think of her that way. He lives in a city of purity called Pieure, with animals as he calls the people in the city.
He is so stuck in proving himself to be different from others and at the same time trying to mix with the crowd, which makes him quite a loner. The only thing he looks forward to, is spending some time with his mom in the morning and evening other than that, he feels he has no purpose in life.
Everything changes when our female protagonist, Carly Wits, enters the scene. Adam is drawn to her by an invisible string that he can’t put his finger on. Carly also feels some weird connection with Adam but brushes that off, until they slowly started to fall for each other unknowingly.
In the following chapters, Adam stumbles upon his existence and questions everything around him. Carly helps him find the truth about himself and he comes to know that he is the descendants of one of the seven Russian families. He has a different genotype present in his body granting him certain supernatural power.
Carly also belongs to one of the seven families and tells him a lot about their history. Like any other science fiction story, some mad scientists are trying to reveal such powers, killing a lot of family members in this process. Adam is exasperated to know the truth and want to kill those scientists, who have taken his real parents away from him.
Calix has done a very good job of explaining the plot. There were not any plot lines missing and I loved the way book which took us on a roller coaster ride. Moreover, the characters were very nicely developed and don’t make any rash decisions like every other teenager.
However, the novel was exceptionally well edited with the grammatical part but, I found quite a lot of spacing issues between the words which compels me to give this book a 3 out of 4 stars. It was one of the best stories that I have ever read, but it lacked some research at some part which did make sense to explain a few made-up scientific terms.
This story didn’t disappoint me and kept me on my toes, in fact, I completed the story in just two days so you can guess how much I loved it. There is not a lot of profanity or any vivid sexual scenes but deals with some serious issues so I would strongly recommend it to adult readers.
There are a lot of things that I want to encounter in a young-adult novel, one of the most important things for me is how the characters grow in each other’s presence and this story did make the characters inspire us. Certain choices made by the teenage mind in this novel tells us how mature they are.
The author has taken relationships seriously, be it a romantic relationship, friendship, or beautiful bond between a mother and daughter, she did a great job with that. Lastly, I loved the authentic plot twist that helped me to picturise this novel excellently. People who are into science fiction and thriller will absolutely love it.
Happy Reading:)
