A coming of age story with paranormal themes. Adam feels out of place in his own world. His life revolves around his home, school, and his mother – who he has an abnormal fascination with. He feels he is different, and his lack of understanding of how different takes him down a dark path. He feels that he is a sociopath and humans are just animals. In the early parts of the book he even kidnaps a girl named Terry. He immediately realizes he was wrong in doing so but she accidently dies. He covers it up in his guilt.

Then he meets Carly, a new student at his school. There is an instant recognition and attraction between them. Their relationship starts out strained, but they cannot resist the pull between them. She becomes the light in his darkness. He then learns that he was adopted, and he comes from a race with superhuman abilities. They call themselves the Descendants. In a whirlwind, he learns that his people are hunted, his mother is dead, and he has a twin brother who is a member of a group called the Ishka. The Ishka hunts the Descendants for their talents and will either kill them or turn them to get what they want.

Adam then meets Dauma, Carly’s mother. He learns that he has a choice between light and the darkness within him. His love for Carly makes him want to be a better person. As he and Carly become close, he confesses all and she forgives him. She teaches him about his gifts and how to use them. He revels in all he has gained.

Adam changes quickly throughout the story as he works to protect the people he loves from the Ishka. Through many challenges he learns to use his gifts and gains new friendships. He learns that there is always a choice to be a good person, and it only takes one moment to decide. Along the way his darkness turns to light and he becomes a better man for it.

Opaque: Scion Saga Book 1, by Calix Leigh-Reign is the first book in the series. The book is a clean read with very few profanities and very mild teenage love moments. I give this book a four out of four stars. This book is extremely well-edited. What I like most about this book is the way Adam changes throughout. What I disliked about this book is the death of Terry, which seemed unnecessary. This book is perfect for pre-teen to adult readers.
