Review by echelton -- Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign
To be honest, I was a little skeptical about this book in the beginning. The first few chapters made me feel uncomfortable due to the main character's taboo obsession. I had to remind myself that I was judging the book prematurely, and that it's possible I was supposed to feel this way. I stuck with it, and soon after, I could not put Opaque by Carlix Leigh-Reign down. Leigh-Reign has a way of making you question what you are reading, only to find yourself sucked in, hungry to find the answers.
This young adult fantasy essentially follows the experiences of Adam and Carly. Adam is unique in his way of thinking compared to what society has deemed normal, and at times he seems confused and disgusted by his own opaque thoughts. Although growing up a hermit, Carly is a well-balanced character who naturally has a good head on her shoulders. When Carly is introduced, the peculiarity about Adam starts to click into place, and his complex thoughts start to become clear for both himself and the reader. Carly helps Adam bring to light the truth of his family's history, and together they learn and grow despite the obstacles they come to face.
Opaque appears professionally edited, with only one word written in Russian (Raspadat'sya) that my translator would not convert; therefore causing my only dislike of having to look elsewhere for the English adaption. This is not necessarily something that affects my rating. Although, if the translation of each Russian passage would have been integrated more into the novel, I believe that it would have helped the (non-bilingual) reader effortlessly flow through the story line without having to go to outside resources.
I would give this book 4 out of 4 stars because Leigh-Reign has a way to make you truly feel the emotions of each of her carefully created characters. Her descriptive language creates a world of its own, one you soon become fully invested. I came to realize the way that I perceived the authored solemn thoughts, often ended up being the underlying and not yet voiced feelings of the character at play. I truly enjoyed the gifted writing, and the need of knowing what was going to happen to Adam, Carly and all of their loved ones as if they were my own.
I would recommend Opaque to anyone who enjoys reading about young adult romance in a wonderfully woven dreamscape with characters who are learning to master inherited genetic abilities. I am eager to read the next two books of the Scion Saga to see the adventures Carlix Leigh-Reign springs on the characters that I have come to admire.
