Opague by Calix Leigh-Reign is the first book in the Scion Saga. Combine teenage angst, supernatural powers, and a whirlwind teenage romance; you have Opague. Adam knows that life for a teenage boy is hard enough, but he can’t imagine a normal kid having to deal with the demons he fights daily. His odd tendencies and intense hatred for the human race as a whole leave Adam as a loner. He sees every piece of darkness inside himself and seems to be preparing himself for a life as a real life monster. The way things are going, no one is surprised as he is when Carly walks into his life. From the very beginning, the two share an intense bond that seems to carry them through every obstacle they meet. Adam is eventually able to face and conquer some of his perceived mental illness with Carly’s help. The couple set out on an extraordinary adventure that will test not only themselves, but also their bond together, and with others.

This book blew my socks off! Within the first dozen pages, I was completely entranced. Adam and Carly’s journey is not one I expected to be so invested in. As I read this book and saw into the characters' minds, as the author wrote them, I fell further and further into their world. This book is something I expected to enjoy reading. I was NOT prepared for how obsessed I would become with the story! There wasn’t a single page that was boring. Every word and every sentence kept me grounded to the world the author was creating. There were a few times I had to go back and reread pages, because I couldn’t believe what I had just read. The author did an amazing job introducing characters without shifting focus from the plot. Furthermore, there were hardly any unnecessary characters, every single one circled back into the plot.

The author not only kept me ripping through pages with an absolutely fantastic story and interesting characters, but also worked in important life lessons. These life lessons could very easily be missed because the phrasing makes them seem subtle when in reality they are everything! Characters illustrate how your actions can affect others. They also depict how your decisions can be influenced based on your environment and surrounding support system. This book had an awesome amount of strong female characters, without tipping the balance into a “girl power” novel. Anyone of any gender can enjoy this book, because they can relate to some piece of it. Personally, I also enjoyed the subtle hints of Christianity in the book. There were only a few instances, such as; praying before a meal or offering prayers for the ill. However, someone who may not be particularly spiritual may not even notice the subtle nods.

If I had to make one complaint about the book, I would have to say there are a few times the author could be more clear about who is speaking. This is quite literally the only negative thing I have to say about the writing. Even this is based solely on a personal preference.

I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. If I could give a higher rating, I would without a second thought. I hadn’t even finished reading the book before I started recommending it to friends! There is something in this book for everyone who loves to read! Absolutely fantastic book!
