Review by 17_willis -- Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign
As a lifelong resident of Piure, California, Adam resorts to blending in with the humans he perceives as animals. Every day he spends the least required time with the disdainful animals. The only human Adam can stand to be around is his mother JoAnn, the ageless human of which he shares desires unlike any other animal could be capable. That is, until Carly moves into town.
From the first time Adam’s eyes met Carly’s, he was captivated. The usual human touch he found absolutely repulsive, but Carly’s touch was full of electrifying heat that was utterly compelling. Little did they know, the day they met was the first day of the rest of their life together. Carly’s past and reason for moving would catch up causing a life altering change in the reality that was blissfully human. Adam would learn facts about his past that drew him closer to those he loves. Nothing would be the same.
Opaque, the first book in the Scion Saga Series written by Calix Leigh-Reign, was an exquisitely written book that I rate 3 out of 4 stars. What I liked the most about Opaque was the effort Calix Leigh-Reign put into building the mind set and thought process of Adam. Adam was a very unusual character that differs from the typical mindset of today’s society. The depth that was taken to show what set Adam apart from humans assisted in perceiving him as unique and significant. The details that set Adam apart from the human population are what made him feel at home with Carly and eventually his mother JoAnn. The part I disliked the most was the connection and desire between Adam and JoAnn. This sexual craving that Adam felt for his mother was revolting. I felt that such a topic in chapter one set a detestable theme for the rest of the book. However such details aided in understanding the relief felt by both Adam and JoAnn when they were given the explanation for the cause of such feelings. It was a weight lifted off their shoulders that even the reader could feel.
I give this book 3 out of 4 stars instead of 4 out of 4 stars because of the undesirable details of chapter one that are sure to turn some readers away. However I did not give the book 2 out of 4 stars because I was absolutely hooked from chapter 2 until the very end. There was never a moment where I felt like the page dragged on. This book was written at a higher reading level and had a well drafted feel. I did not find any incorrect punctuation or misspelled words and believe the book to be exceptionally well edited. Calix Leigh-Reign wrote a thrilling book full of love, pain, selflessness, and excitement.
